Gauge (Straight) — Hornady part #C1000 — is built to nail down that measurement with confidence. This model is designed for all bolt-action and single-shot firearms, or any firearm with straight-line access to the chamber, and is preferred because it's the most precise and user-friendly version of the tool. To take a measurement, you'll need a Modified Case (sold separately) to fit your firearm's chamber and thread onto the gauge — these specially prepared modified cases are threaded at the case-head and have a .002" oversized neck to accept the same bullets you intend to load . That threaded, caliber-specific case design is the key to its accuracy: the gauge dimensions obtained will be accurate to .001", results that can't be attained with competitive products that use a simulated bullet with an arbitrary shape . Because the gauge itself is universal, it can be paired with any of the Hornady modified cases available across a wide range of calibers to build out a setup for whatever rifle you're loading for.
